The story of Buckfast Queens
My name is Mogens Mundt and I run my own beekeeping business with a primary focus on the production of my own breeding queens for sale both at home and abroad. My production consists of both free-paired and island mated breeding queens and overwintered queens.
My interest in beekeeping started in my youth, following first my grandfather's and later my father's beekeeping on the sidelines. The interest grew beyond my family's hobby beekeeping and I turned my focus to queen breeding.
I live just outside Stenlille in the centre of Zealand. Here I live on a small country house with my family, which includes my wife Lisbeth and our two big boys Mikkel and Kasper. When I'm not working hard with queen breeding, I find peace and joy in nature and do some hunting with Kasper and my two Labradors.
I regularly attend courses and lectures on queen breeding and beekeeping in general to learn about new initiatives and methods in both Denmark and around the world.
My collaboration with Buckfast Denmark
I visited queen breeder Keld Brandstrup and was able to follow him closely on the sidelines and learn about selecting top-class breeding material and handling the queen breeding process.
After 4-5 years, I took over more and more of the queen production for Keld Brandstrup along with my own beekeeping.
I started my own queen breeding programme about 10 years ago and in 2020 I took over Keld Brandstrup's beekeeping and breeding materials - and now benefit from Keld as a fantastic sparring partner in terms of queen selection and ideas in general.
In addition, Keld is also responsible for orders and shipping abroad.
